Just today I read online that "Kevin Costner is now reportedly set to play Superman's adoptive father Jonathan Kent." Costner seems like a pretty good choice for Pa Kent when you think about him in Field of Dreams. Now I don't really have an opinion of Kevin Costner as an actor but I liked Waterworld and if Tin Cup were on TV I would stop and watch it.
The Superman reboot is even being directed by Zack Snyder who has done a good job directing other comic book adaptions so far. I thought 300 was great and Watchmen was an awesome version of the graphic novel. On paper this new movie sounds like a win win for Superman.
So why am I so gun shy about this new Superman movie? Is it the fact that the movie was rushed into production so Warner Brothers wouldn't lose the rights to make Superman movies? Is it that I thought Superman Returns was 80% horrible? Is it the possibility that they will just use Lex Luthor as the main enemy of Superman instead of someone much cooler?
The simple answer is that all Superman movies suck. The 1978 Superman movie may have been the best comic book adaptation of it's time but that time is long gone. All that is left now is one fun yet campy movie made over 30 years ago and a series of increasingly crap-tastic sequels. Although I truly hope this new movie is good it has a huge up hill climb ahead of it.
I wish the best of luck to Zack Snyder and his crew.
