Over the weekend Jacque and I were able to finally attend a Can't Stop the Serenity (CSTS) screening and it was awesome. For the past five years CSTS has been showing Serenity to raise money for Equality Now. A group that works to end violence and discrimination against women and girls around the world. (yes I lifted that sentence from their website)
Not only did we get to see a movie we loved on the big screen with 300 other fans of the movie but we also helped by raising money for a good cause. It was a great night and in addition to seeing Serenity they also showed Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog which was amazing to see with so many people. Although it was fun I was a bit sad that their wasn't as much audience participation during the songs. I didn't expect a Rocky Horror Picture Show level of participation but I figured at least a room that big would be half full of singing people. The first song started and I began to sing along and very shorty I noticed Jacque and I were the only two singing around us. I was a bit let down by that so I drowned by disappointment in Mr. Pibb and felt a lot better. Still very cool to feel the energy of 300 people....ahem....enjoying themselves.
We might go again next year but this got me thinking of other charities that would benefit from a movie screening. NASA could hold showings of Star Wars or Star Trek, you could show Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou to raise money to save the ocean or what if a showing of There Will Be Blood raised money to help clean up the oil spills around the world? Obviously this idea needs some fleshing out but it would be great if every movie I paid ten dollars to see made money for some noble cause.
